Health Tip: Packing Prescriptions for Travel

(HealthDay News) -- If you're planning to pack prescription drugs when traveling by air, there are steps you can take to avoid trouble taking them on board.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control offers this advice:

• Put your prescription medications in your carry-on bag, rather than in checked luggage.
• Bring along a copy of each prescription, which should include the drug's generic name.
• If you are carrying a controlled substance or a drug that is injected, bring along a note on letterhead from the doctor who prescribed it.
• Give a friend or family member another copy of your prescriptions to keep at home.
• Make sure to check with the consulate or American Embassy to be sure you are allowed to take your medications into the country that you're visiting.
